A Very Warm Christmas Eve

Getting sick of me writing about the heat? We are sick of living it! The AC went back on a few days ago as the temperature rose to 84 degrees, and the humidity, well, who knows how high it was, but when you can hardly get your cookies off the counter, it is way too high!

I've only baked one batch this year, which is unlike me, but with few folks in the house to eat them, they will go to waste. I almost managed to bake a perfect batch that is if you don't count the ones that were slightly overcooked. :)
In order to put the photos in my blog posts, I have to upload them into an album that I label with each month. I see that this month began with another baking shot, however, it was with my thin rolling pin that I was so pleased with. Not so fast....didn't work worth a damn on the cookies, rolling them way too thin, adding to my difficulties. The moral of the story is, that it is good to have both a thick one, and a thin one if you like to bake!

No doubt you will be sad, as are we, that Corrine's daughter came to take her home to Alabama. She seems to be a lovely woman, whom I only just met two days ago, as she has visited her Mom but twice in the fourteen years she has lived here with Herb. That made me a little nervous before meeting her, but my fears were allayed during the two days she was here. Bruce and I took some cookies over for their long drive home, and while we were there, Corrine got a call from her house cleaner to say goodbye.
On the other hand, you will be happy to learn that she broke not a thing during her fall, and in her Southern drawl, she is doing "pretty good." It is with great sadness that this chapter in our lives is over. :(

I got out on my bicycle the other morning, and as always there are Christmas displays worth sharing, including this one that I'm thinking is a Florida thing.
It was junk city in front of the house where I took this, but I thought the little Santas were pretty cute.
A second sighting of one of these old fashioned trees was nice.
And then there is the pirate ship I saw yesterday morning...had to go back in the evening to see how it looked lit up.
And just when you think you've seen it all as to Christmas tie-ins, here is a dinosaur with a moving head no less!
What, pray tell, will they think of next?

Buying gifts for folks is always a challenge...what to get, what to get? Well, it sure helps when folks know you have a penchant for something, and in my case I needn't tell you that would be birds because you guessed it already didn't you? Matt brought me home a darling little red and white felt bird for the tree...
while Pat gave me an amazing owl ornament...
Aren't they super? By the way, my tiny tree has been deemed a success, in spite of its stature. Plus, the presents surrounding them look even more ample.
In spite of mailing quite a few, there seems to be more presents than normal, spilling over onto the fireplace which surely will see no action this Christmas.

So what have we been doing while not eating or sleeping? Shopping, but not for Christmas gifts. Tom and Matt love to visit food stores and we've done our fair share of that, including a Costco run.
But not before we looked high and low for some freeze dried coffee. Ever since we visited the UK a couple of years ago, and learned of such a miracle product, we've found some at our local Publix and the neighborhood Walmart store. Except they both quit carrying it, and the jar was completely empty. After four different stores we finally found some in the Spanish grocery store, well it is from Miami, Sedona, housed in a former Albertsons. They had some serious can displays.
More importantly they had the product we were searching for and at a bargain price I might add. Two jars should last for a while, or so we hope!

I hear Bruce coming in from doing the unthinkable...mowing the lawn on Christmas Eve! It just will not quit growing in this heat. Of course, it is like that everywhere isn't it? Our London lads tell me the daffodils are coming up in the city parks. Remarkable! I read in today's paper that heat records will be broken in Florida this year but you knew that already if you've been reading Camera Crazy this year. And thank you for doing so I humbly add.

Finally, the paper has also joked about it being a white Christmas here and that would be the sand kind...taken last week at Ponce Inlet.

Merry Christmas my friends,

Gail

Keeping it Simple

Remember that gigantic stop sign they were installing at the corner of Pershing and Ferncreek? You don't? Well, this blog is not a test, so let's recap..

What seemed like a perfectly good stop sign on the corner of the aforementioned streets was replaced by the city because they hoped it would get people to stop. Apparently it did not work yesterday morning because as I crossed Pershing to head East, I saw this in the distance.
Mmm....wonder what's happening....hope everyone is okay. YIKES!! Look at this:
According to a woman standing at the corner, the cyclist has some injuries and was taken to the hospital. Injuries, how could they avoid injuries when their bicycle is UNDER a truck?? She assured me that he would be fine--as if she knew! Clearly, one of the parties involved in this accident was not paying attention no matter how GIGANTIC the stop sign.  On my return trip I noted dents along the side of the truck, so if I had to guess, it was not the first time the truck driver was not paying attention.

Oftentimes I ride by my friend Sue's house in the morning, usually never stopping because it is early. Because the door was open, I hollered out....well maybe not hollered, but called out to her. "Gail?" Yes it's me. Coming to the door laughing she said she was in the middle of reading my blog post. How about that for timing? We visited and I gave her a few tips with her camera, however, I could have used some myself as I took this accidental photo of her Christmas tree.
I am like--wonder why this is black and white? After further investigation, I discovered the camera was set on "high-key" which may be something I want to play around with now that I've had this happy accident!

Well, there was no putting off getting my own tree done, so home I went. For a girl who does not particularly enjoy decorating the Christmas tree--I know I should not admit that, but there it is--I was not thrilled when I was nearly finished with the lights only to discover a very, very long strand was not lighting up. Boo hiss! Unwinding the blasted thing, I took it into the kitchen to check,
I made sure the next two strands worked before attempting to use them!
Listening to some of my favorite Christmas albums, I eventually got it done. Jonathan and Alissa gave me the "Glee" Christmas album last year, which remained unplayed until this year. Very fun! I'm strictly a before-Christmas listener.

This year I'm keeping things even simpler than I normally do. No red bead garland on the tree,  as well as a very scaled back Nativity scene.
There is quite the cast of characters that go with this set, however, this year the Holy Family is taking center stage. One thing is bothering me about Joseph--why does he have a shepherd's staff? I can only assume he used it for a walking stick because, as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no mention in the Gospels of Joseph hanging with the sheep. I wonder what they really looked like, don't you? I have a pretty strong suspicion that their clothes were neither this clean, nor their skin this white.

The very first Christmasy thing I did was hang the beautiful mobile Tom gave us when last he visited Florida for Christmas. Fortunately Angela, our 6 feet tall neighbor,  came over just as were hanging it which helped us determine the height!
The purpose of her visit was two-fold--to deliver some Tom Smith crackers she purchased for us, and to pick up her laundry.
Snow globe Frosty is checking them out. Apparently, "Tom Smith" is the first name in Christmas crackers, which we shall soon discover for ourselves, won't we? There should be no hosting a British man for Christmas without crackers, or so she claims. Actually, we had loads of fun with them two years ago, and I have a notion we'll do the same this year.

There is only one part about decorating the tree each year that I love. Unlike some folks, I do not have a styled tree--mine is more eclectic, somewhat like we are. Ornaments from our first Christmas together mingle with new ones, mostly given to us by our children. Through the years I've accumulated a lot of ornaments which I do love, usually the simple ones like this given to us by an anonymous donor. Only kidding! I just can't remember who it was....
At first I thought it was from Maureen's former in-laws, but now I'm not so sure. Anyway, the tree is done for 2012, and I know it will bring pleasure until my birthday.
Except, where the heck is one of the stockings? For the life of us, we can only find three! I'm thinking maybe David took his home last year? I'll call Michelle later today to check on it's whereabouts. Then too, all of the packages you see wrapped need the "Bruce treatment", which if you've ever received a gift from us, you will surely understand. It's no exaggeration to say that his use of ribbon is legendary.

One other thing Angela is hounding us about--pesky neighbor that she is--outdoor lights. Nearly every day she wants to know where is the Peck contribution to a lovely well-lit neighborhood? Don't hold your breath my friend.

It looks as if there is yet another gloomy day on the horizon, or so it seems looking out my window at the start of daylight. The Christmas tree, on the other hand, is sparkling away in the living room as I type. I think I'll go bask in it's brightness.

O Christmas Tree

I dare you to read the lyrics below and not sing along in your head!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer's here,
But also when 'tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
From base to summit, gay and bright,
There's only splendor for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee! !"

Knew you couldn't do it--maybe you didn't know all the lyrics, but I bet you knew some of them, and most definitely the melody! Call me crazy, oh yeah I do call myself crazy, but I love a traditional Christmas tree. No themes, no color schemes, just the life of a family all in one place.

I do like white lights, however, that's not what I grew up with. I know there are some  readers who fondly, wait a minute--that's a joke, remember those big fat lights which invariably didn't work. One went out and the whole strand was plunged into darkness. I needn't remind you how unfunny that was.
I used to put red bows all over the tree to make it all the more festive which I no longer do. That said, I still use much the same ornaments as I ever did, many dating back to our first year of marriage. With that in mind, I thought I might just show off a few of my oldies but goodies.

I can't remember if it was Bruce or I who painted this little happy home--a precursor of what was to come. There's no doubt I wouldn't paint one purple and red these days!
It's old and worn, just like the two of us, but still in love!

Bruce's Mom often gave us thoughtful ornaments related to our interests. You can guess who this was for:
And this one:
Her daughter followed suit, each year giving our family ornaments going back to when the children were very young. When I pull them out each year I think about the saying that there's nothing in life not subject to change. The children grow, marriages break up, parents die. All part of life.
On the left is the last ornament Bruce's mom gave us before she died. The star is one my sister-in-law gave us when Matthew was quite young, the red stocking came from who knows where, and the one on the right has a little Gingerbread boy cross stitched on front with David's name. The back has a little tag with love from Aunt Michele and Uncle Paul, 1989. They eventually divorced and Paul has subsequently died an early death. Time passages...

To break the little maudlin spell I've got going, I believe this has got to be the weirdest ornament we have. Purchased maybe from Pier 1, way back when?
It's a tea strainer of all things!

Michele, Bruce's sister, gave us one of my favorites:
Reminding us of the true reason for the season.

During his world travels, Matthew often picks up an ornament for us and this year was no exception. He left behind this sweet little thing from Sweden:
And then there are the ornaments the children made. I'm thinking schools probably ban that activity today?
On the left, the crazy looking little church building, is one Jonathan "made" when he was 4. David, pictured on the tree, was 10. Good grief he looks so adorable and sweet! The soldier below is from, you guessed it, our first Christmas.

Our daughter-in-law Michelle LOVES decorating for Christmas. Before she and David married I can't remember anyone, or at least anyone who admitted to it, leaving the Christmas tree up WAY past December. She and David happily enjoy the tree into January. She also loves giving ornaments, including these sweet ones from their first year of marriage.
It is hard to believe they've just celebrated their third anniversary! And then there are the ornaments I've no idea who gave them to us but I still love them.
I have two of these little cuties and they make me smile every time I see them. So, finally, I've put the boxes in the garage and am done. If my sister Carol were to see my feeble decorating, she'd tell me things weren't festive enough, however, for us, it's enough.
I did have to go back to my last year's Christmas decorating post to remember what the heck I put on the table! So, things are all very festive here. How about your place?

Happy decorating friends,
Gail
