Spectacular Spring

If you've ever taken Baxter for a walk you know that it can be a terrific pain in the neck. Not only is he stubborn about going where you want him to go, he stops to mark nearly every mailbox, light pole and fire hydrant he comes across, making for a pretty much stop and go process. Inadvertently I've found a new way for him to get his exercise; I've begun taking him to Cypress Grove Park, letting him run free in the big open fields.

Right now, with the glorious weather we've been having, it is just great. When we arrive he literally jumps out of the Element taking off like a little rabbit. Of course I go in the early morning when there are few people about with no chance for him to get too far away. This morning it occurred to me that it was like when my children were young--I preferred to let them run a bit free, watching from the sidelines, knowing they would come back when they realized they had gone just a little too far. They, of course, will probably dispute what I've said, but that's how I remember it. I would not make a good parent today because I hated to keep them too tied down. Naturally we had some rules, but not nearly as many as some. I will attest that we were pretty strict about grades, however nothing like what I went through as a youngster. Chores, same thing. My siblings will tell you we had to do everything around the house which made for some very unhappy Price children. As such I made sure that our boys knew how to do laundry, wash dishes, vacuum etc. but mostly I did it. I really didn't mind. These days I have so little that needs doing that looking back it almost seems a privilege.

The park has a lovely lakefront setting with gigantic, old moss-draped cypress trees and a rose garden that is bursting with colorful blooms! Best of all it is but a mile away.

Speaking of exercise the bike is getting used!

The days have been busy this week with Monday a learning experience about shipping rates. I had a fantastic sales weekend at the markets with one man buying two smaller canvases asking if I would ship them to California. When he asked me how much it would cost I was way off--by like ten dollars! Anyway, it all worked out fine by both of us. I shipped the one I told you about last week to Pennsylvania. Things have indeed been going well for Out & About Photography.

I learned late last week that Mr. Roger's son Ed is not cancer-free despite two surgeries, radiation and chemo therapy. Recently he not only graduated with his engineering degree from UCF, but he bought a house nearby with a house warming party on the horizon. Roger was despondent over the idea of more surgery. I went right over to Angela's house asking her about her latest surgeon, calling from there to pass on the information. Angela took over the conversation, encouraging Roger with her latest surgical success story; she's had a total of eighteen on her face alone from the near fatal car crash twenty years ago. I hardly notice her glass eye anymore, and after having the big mass removed from behind her good eye she looks great, with the sweetest personality you can imagine. We love having her across the street. In fact she is going to watch Mr. Baxter next week while we are gone.

Right now the big excitement is for our camping trip next week. I can't believe I'm going camping but it was actually my suggestion. Bruce is so thrilled he wants to leave right away. We've settled on a state park named Oscar Sherer, six miles south of Sarasota. There is a large lake with sandy beach and what they are calling a creek looks like a river to me! I've reserved a spot along the river with a bath house very close. If you care, and most likely you don't but I'm posting it just the same! I've not been camping in maybe fifteen years, mostly because I hate the preperations and packing but with all my new experience with showtime it has been a primer. We'll be sleeping IN the Element rather than a tent. Without the back seats there is adequate room for both of us to use sleeping pads and linens. The canoe will be hoisted onto the roof by Mr. Bruce, although I'll help if I can, and the bikes mount on the back. Bruce is an old pro at camping dating back to his Boy Scout days. Hopefully the mild temperatures of late will continue. Tomorrow we'll get into more specifics about "Bruce and Gail's Upcoming Adventure."

Monday, Monday

I am very lucky I don't have to make a living selling photographs as I'd surely be out on the streets by now! Yesterday the canvas sold, which was super--today nothing. Unfortunately, our produce people at the market need to sell all that they bring to market as they have SIX children, one with Downs Syndrome. We heard from our neighbor vendor that they had been at a festival the day before where they brought a trailer full of pumpkins that did not sell. It wasn't their fault, but the organizers who had called them several times urging them to bring scads. The bad news is that there was another group (?) giving them away at that same festival. Needless to say Jonathan and Amy had tons left over which you see here artfully arranged. I felt so terrible for them we bought two which, with this heat, will probably be rotten before Halloween.

It is 90 degrees today and I felt every degree of it this morning--probably adding to my not feeling very good right now. I have had some problems over the weekend, but have just kept going.

I was watching the FSU--Miami game Saturday evening when we left to meet with Michael and Jane for dinner. The game was close all the way through; we finally got it on the radio. There was a huge play when FSU stopped the Hurricanes on the two inch line and then the radio station cut out! It was just as well that I didn't see the last five minutes as our quarterback made some very costly mistakes which essentially gave the game away. Painful.

Bruce left this morning at 5 again for another very long week. I miss him terribly, but this spell will not last forever. I feel awful he has to work such long hours--some days it was 19!! Those of you who know Bruce know that he is capable of doing so and doing it well.

Pat and Ruth were kind enough to bring a crate over to Maureen this weekend for the dog. I think she has settled on the name "Gusto" which seems to suit him perfectly. In one week he has nearly driven her crazy with his boundless energy and curiosity. Of course she wouldn't want a dull dog but she would like to have a little peace back in her home. He apparently went in the crate willingly and she could finally relax.

The Display

Here is the first half of the display! Bruce is hanging things so that we can get an idea how it works; it works just great. He used a hardware cloth that he attached to a frame he made; he then covered that with the cloth you see, and attached it using screen spline so the edges are very neat. There is a hinge in the middle so we can fold it and put it on top of the car. That will be the next challenge; Bruce has roof racks for his BMW, however there will be a bunch of stuff.

As you can see, Baxter is up and running once again, thank goodness.

This is my first week day of Spring break and we took a little walk around the neighborhood this morning--naturally, I found flowers to photograph. I ran a very few errands but I'm worn out, so back at home in front of the computer again.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be perkier, and able to take advantage of this nice weather. In the mean-time, I am clearing out photos from Picassa as I have probably taken at least 1,000 photos in the last two months--not all of them good! I'm sure I will need the space for the next 1,000.

It's A New Dawn, It's a New Day, and I'm Feeling Good

I am up early this morning preparing to write my paper for Humanities on The Book of the Courtier. It is a lengthy discourse on what today we would call a Renaissance man, although, it is completely contemporary, aside from the fact that we no longer consider it important for a man to be a great warrior. It isn't due yet, but I decided to try and get it out of the way if I can. I have two tests this Thursday; today seems like a good day to use for the paper.

Our poor little Baxter is still under the weather, however, he is eating, and drinking, so that's a good sign. We took him with us when we went to the farmer's market yesterday after church and he walked a bit. The big news is that Bruce talked to the manager again and we are going to display March 18! We bought the canopy yesterday at Costco, as well as more frames. This is a very scary business but time will tell whether it was a good idea or not!

Our darling Matthew called yesterday morning from his office in London--acquiring internet in his apartment is proving to be a challenge. He sounded spectacular--already out on Saturday night with friends, moved into his apartment, and been to a concert. Work is going great for him as well. Jonathan's softball team won their first game, so he was excited, and David continues to make money hand over fist even when the market is down. Bill is doing well studying for his licensing exams--in other words, the Peck boys (men) are grand.

One thing I have noticed since we have been going out a bunch on the weekends is that there are all sorts of people, who like all sorts of things. At the market yesterday, there were a contingent of bird people. Who knew?
